The Zero Point Strategy: How Game Theory Can Help You Start Over
We often fear “starting over.” We view it as a failure, a loss of progress, or a return to square one. But what if we shifted our perspective? To take our strategy a step further, let’s apply a more rigorous framework to the art of beginning again: “Game Theory.”
What if hitting zero wasn't a retreat, but a highly strategic move?
In Game Theory, the outcome of any situation depends on the choices made by the player. Often, we get stuck playing a game we’ve already lost because we are too afraid to clear the board. At Origin Zero, we believe that the most powerful move you can make is knowing when to reset.
1. The Sunk Cost Fallacy
In economics and psychology, the “sunk cost fallacy” describes our tendency to stick with a failing endeavor simply because we have already invested time, money, or effort into it.
From a game theory perspective, this is irrational. If your current strategy is not yielding the desired win condition, continuing to play it—even if you’ve invested heavily—is a path to further loss. Starting over at zero is not a waste of time; it is an act of reclaiming your agency. You are choosing to stop playing a losing game so you can start a winning one.
2. The Three Principles of the Zero Point Reset
When you treat your life, career, or goals as a “game state,” you can apply these three principles to your next pivot:
- Perfect Information: Unlike your first attempt, you now have the data from your previous moves. You aren’t “starting over”—you are “re-entering with experience.” You know the obstacles, the timing, and your own patterns.
- Strategic Agility: The “Zero Point” allows you to switch your game entirely. Whether you are changing careers or redesigning your daily environment, hitting zero frees you to reallocate your resources to a strategy that actually works.
- Redefining the Rules: When you reset, you get to write the new “rules of engagement.” You aren’t bound by the habits or constraints of your past strategy.
3. How to Execute Your Reset
Before you hit the reset button, follow this protocol to ensure you aren’t just quitting—you are upgrading:
- Detach: Emotionally separate from the “sunk cost.” Acknowledge that the past investment is gone, and focus only on the current board.
- Define: Clearly articulate your new “Winning Conditions.” What does success look like this time?
- Execute: Make your first move from zero with the intent of a player who now knows exactly how the game is played.
Your Game, Your Terms
As we’ve explored in our previous posts, at Origin Zero, we believe every great achievement begins with the right foundation. That ‘Zero’ in our name isn’t about having nothing—it’s about the point of origin. By applying this new strategic framework, we see even more clearly that this ‘zero point’ is the essential blank canvas upon which you define your future.
Stop playing a game you’ve already lost. Clear the board, source your knowledge, and start your next move from a position of power.
